Admissions to the MA in Muslim Cultures
Under its charter, Aga Khan University is open to all academically qualified candidates. The University is non-denominational and admission to its academic programmes is needs-blind and based strictly on merit.
Candidates wishing to apply for the MA in Muslim Cultures must complete an application form, including a personal statement, giving their reasons for wishing to enrol in the MA Programme and send it
with a copy of their degree and transcript(s). Please note that referees should submit
the references directly to the Registrar's Office, arriving no later
than 31 January 2010. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to
participate in an interview.
Financial Assistance
Through its Financial Assistance Programme, the University ensures that no individual qualified for admission to the Institute will be excluded because of inability to pay tuition, living expenses and other costs.
Such assistance will be provided through loans or scholarships to supplement personal resources. Assistance is based upon the evaluation of a student's need from financial data provided by the student. Unless otherwise stated, every student is expected to make some contribution towards their fees, accommodation or subsistence.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for admission, applicants will hold the following degree(s) from an accredited / recognized university:
- A first degree of good standing (typically a 2.1
honours equivalent in the British system or a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 out
of 4.0) or equivalent qualification preferably in the humanities or social
sciences
- English Proficiency Requirement
The MA in Muslim Cultures programme exempts candidates from the English language proficiency requirements if they have completed undergraduate studies in the following countries:
Australia, Canada (expect Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, UK, USA.
TOEFL
- Paper-based Test: minimum 600
- Computer-based Test: minimum 250
- Internet-based Test: minimum 100
IELTS
If appropriate documentary evidence of English proficiency is not provided, applicants will be required to take an English language proficiency test administered by AKU-ISMC. Applicants must pass this test in order to qualify for enrolment.
Tuition Fees
The annual tuition fee from September 2011 is £10,880. In cases where a student withdraws from the MA Programme, tuition for the entire term will be charged. Alternatively, students may pay their fees in four instalments of £2,720.
Making an Application
Candidates wishing to apply for the MA in Muslim Cultures must provide the following:
- Application form;
- Personal statement, giving their reasons for wishing to enrol in the programme;
- Official attested copy of their degree and the transcripts (if a document is not in English you must provide a fully certified translation by a professional translator. The translation must include details of the translator and confirm that it is an accurate translation of the original. It must be dated and include the original signature of the translator);
- Proof of English proficiency;
- Two references, submitted either directly to the Registrar's Office or along with the application in a sealed envelope with the referee signature across the seal. Referees must be familiar with your academic and/or professional work to date. At least one referee should be familiar with your academic work. If your referee(s) would like to submit the reference letter via email, please download the reference form and complete your details before sending it your referees; referees should send the form directly to the Registrar's Office at ismc.registraroffice@aku.edu.
All the shortlisted candidates will be asked to participate in an interview.
