Health Professions Education (HPE)
Courses
Introductory Short Course
Introductory Short Course (ISC) introduces participants to educational philosophies supporting Health Professions Education (HPE) globally, and innovative teaching learning strategies and pitfalls in assessment.
Target Audience
The ISC is targeted towards all faculty members and residents involved in teaching, particularly the newly recruited faculty and senior residents and has been made mandatory by the Dean Medical College , for all newly inducted Aga Khan University faculties.
This course is a pre-requisite for all other courses offered by the DED.

Advanced Level Certificate Courses
The Advanced Level Certificate Courses (ALCs) aim to provide in-depth knowledge and skills in defined areas and ensure undertaking review of literature and a problem-solving by each participant, based on current best evidence.
The ALCs are not offered in any particular order and are complete in them. Participants may take one or two according to their area of interest and receive certificates for the respective courses. Those participants, who successfully complete all five certificate courses, will be awarded a Diploma in HPE. The courses may be taken in a sequence convenient to the participant, as long as a total duration of four years is not exceeded.
Target Audience
The ALCs are targeted towards those more interested in developing in-depth knowledge and skills in different areas of HPE, according to their interest or institutional assignment(s). These could be faculty at large, who wish to become good educators, or more particularly, faculty members who are chairs and members of the curriculum committees, the assessment and promotions committees or equivalents.

Advanced Diploma
The participants will be eligible for the award of the Diploma in HPE after all five required courses: one ISC and four Advanced Level Courses (ALCs). The Advanced Diploma aims to produce educators working within the field of medical, nursing, dental or allied health education, who will be both academically informed and practically competent.
Target audience
The target audience for the Diploma would be the chairs and members of the year committees, curriculum committees, assessment and promotions committees (or equivalent), programme coordinators and programme directors of educational programmes.

Additional Required Courses (ARC)
These two courses are offered as stand alone courses and may be taken by interested participants after the completion of ISC-HPE. However, both of these courses are required for participants wishing to pursue a Masters in Health Professions Education (MHPE) degree.
Electives
Courses may be taken according to the participant's interest; however these have to be approved by the MHPE Curriculum Committee. Credits will be calculated according to AKU criteria. List of electives that can be taken are given below:
- CHS - Biostatistics
- Medical Humanities
- Independent study with DED faculty
- Problem-based Learning
- Questions development, review and post hoc analysis
- Standard setting and posthoc analysis
- Teaching and learning
- Standardised patient
- Mini CEX
- Portfolio based assessment
- Courses offered by AKU Institute for Educational Development;
- Course on research proposal development and grant writing offered by the Research Office, AKU;
- Online or face-to-face courses from elsewhere, for example, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP) or from the University of Illinois, Chicago or University of Dundee, UK.
The philosophy behind electives is to help individuals build expertise in area(s) of their own interest, which may not be covered indepth during the courses.

Future Masters in Health Professions Education
The Department for Educational Development is working towards a Masters in Health Professions Education (MHPE), which aims to provide opportunities for teachers to further increase their knowledge, skills and expertise in Health Professions Education.
Target audience
The target audience for the MHPE would be those interested in taking a leadership role in HPE in their institutions, nationally and internationally. These maybe professionals interested in becoming the Associate Dean(s) of education, Chairs of the departments of medical or nursing education, playing lead roles at the government level in health and education, and others. They would also be those individuals who would like to pursue a doctoral degree in HPE or Education, or become researchers in HPE.
For MHPE, in addition to all of the five certificate courses, additional required and elective courses and a thesis, based on high quality original research, will be required.
