Course Description

Aga Khan University (AKU) Department for Educational Development is offering a course on Research Methodologies in Health Professions Education (HPE) from February 11 - 23, 2008.

Aim

The course focuses on research methodology most applicable in education, a vision for research and development of a research proposal.

  • Fulfills requirements of the Additional Required Course (ARC – R) on Research Methodologies, for the future Masters in HPE (MHPE).
  • Certificate in Research Methodologies-HPE will be awar ded on successful completion of this course subject to submission of assignments within deadline. No assignments will be accepted after the deadline.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course the participants will be able to:

  • relate theoretical perspectives to qualitative and quantitative research approaches;
  • identify the advantages, disadvantages and uses of both;
  • use of qualitative and quantitative data analyses as necessary;
  • relate different research methodologies to different research questions;
  • develop a vision and strategic plan for initiating and enhancing educational research;
  • sustain research agenda by accessing the nee ded resources;
  • practice the ethics of research and publication;
  • develop a research proposal. Identify, select and justify the use of appropriate methods for research question(s).

Eligibility and Screening Criteria

  • Applicants should be health care professionals in Medicine/Nursing/Dentistry/Allied Health;
  • Applicants have a pre-requisite: HPE-100: Introductory Short Course (ISC) in HPE;
  • Applicants must show proven interest/responsibility in HPE.

Each application will be evaluated against the following criteria:

  • Clarity about the objectives of the course;
  • Relevant educational background and qualification(s);
  • Current educational responsibility to apply the course outcomes; such as, leading position (i.e. Chair, Co-chair, Head etc) or membership in educational committees at the institution/department/programme level;
  • Description of benefits of the course to the institution (they work for);
  • Opportunity for professional growth and career development as a result of this course.

 

Educational Strategies

The course will be highly participatory, offered through interactive plenary sessions, individual and group presentations and assignments, workshop formats, exercises, and small group activities including case-based learning.

Assessment

  • In the face-to-face component, assessment will be through continuous observation of participation and contributions, individual and group assignments/presentations, practicum and end of course assessment.
  • In the distance learning component, grading and acceptance of the research proposal.

Programme Director

Dr Rukhsana W Zuberi, Associate Dean Education and Chair, Department for Educational Development – Faculty of Health Science (FHS), Aga Khan University (AKU). She is a Fellow of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (Medicine) and has a Masters degree in Health Professions Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Dr Zuberi has extensive experience in curriculum development She initiated the residency programme in Family Medicine, which was accepted by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan. She has also been the Chair of the Curriculum Committee of the undergraduate medical education programme at AKU for a number of years.

Course Director

Dr Naghma Naeem is a lecturer and Educational Coordinator in the Department for Educational Development, FHS, AKU. She graduated from Dow Medical College and worked in the department for Medical Education, College of Physician 's and Surgeons Pakistan for eight years where she coordinated the development of competency-based structured postgraduate curricula for all specialties and conducted faculty development programmes on assessments.

Currently she is in the process of completing her Masters in Medical Education from University of Dundee (UK). Dr Naeem also participated in 2006 Harward Macy Programme for Leaders in Health Care Professions. At AKU she is the member of undergraduate medical education committees and has taken the lead in development of workshop and courses for assessment and mentoring. Her teaching and research interests are curriculum development, assessment, evaluation and mentorship.
