Advanced Level Course in Curriculum Development (ALC-C) 

Course credits: 3.5

Pre requisite: ISC-HPE

Durations:
One week full-time intensive face-to-face component on-site at AKU. Six weeks of distance learning and assignment completion, with the assignment to be submitted by e-mail.

Aims and Objectives:
The course focuses on the purposes and design of different curricula used in HPE, with emphasis on the participant's involvement within the context of their own profession and institution.

The objectives of the course are to enable the educators of HPE to:

  • design innovative curricula;
  • apply the dynamics of various curricular model in appropriate settings;
  • analyse organisational, social and political factors that can affect curriculum planning, and identify strategies to deal with such factors.

Eligibility

  • Health care professionals in Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry and Allied Health.
  • Pre-requisite: HPE-100: Introductory Short Course.
  • Proven interest/responsibility in HPE.

Educational Strategies and Learning Outcomes
The course will be highly participatory, offered through interactive plenary sessions, individual and group assignments and presentations exercises and small group activities.

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Use the theoretical underpinnings and educational philosophies related to curriculum development.;
  • Identify the factors that shape curricula and how they can be re-aligned to educational needs.
  • Plan, critique and improve curricula.
  • Contest and contribute to the body of knowledge related to HPE curricula, locally and internationally.

 Assessment

  • In the face-to-face component, assessment will be through continuous observation of participation and contributions, individual and group assignments/presentations, and end-of-course assessment.
  • In the distance learning component assessment will be based on completion and grading of a 3000-word individual written assignment.
