Student Affairs

The Student Affairs Office advances Aga Khan University 's (AKU) educational mission by providing a supportive environment for all matters related to student life on campus. Through the following activities and services, it is committed to providing an atmosphere in which both the personal and academic development of students is enhanced.

International Office

AKU's International Office looks after requirements of international students, including immigration needs and arranging for elective placements for students seeking work experience in the developing world. It also assists students who want to attend overseas congresses, conferences and seminars.

For more information contact international.office@aku.edu.

Overseas students wishing to undertake an elective at the University at any stage of their study can contact us at elective@aku.edu.

Financial Assistance

The University's financial assistance programme operates to help students who are unable to pay for their tuition and other education related expenses. It is offered in the form of loans and in some cases grant-in-aid. Scholarships on the basis of academic performance are also available to students.

Record Office

The Records Office is responsible for maintenance and upkeep of all student and University statistics, student transcripts, degrees and diplomas. It also maintains and updates personal records of onboard students and alumni, provides attestations and Dean's letters and recommendation letters upon request.

For more information please contact student.records@aku.edu.

Student Activities

Once accustomed to their busy academic schedule, students are encouraged to share intellectual, social, and recreational activities with fellow students of diverse backgrounds and interests. Student Affairs helps coordinate the activities of arts, culture and publication committees. Sports activities are coordinated through Sports and Rehabilitation Centre. Student Health Services provides health care, with individual monitoring through a Student Health Physician.

Hostel

The University has separate hostels for male and female students. These provide non-air conditioned, simply furnished single rooms with common kitchenette, washroom and laundry facilities for a nominal monthly rent. Students have to bring their own utensils, plates and cutlery. Linen is provided once a week. Students are required to clean their own rooms and take care of all the fixtures and fittings. In case of any breakages, the concerned student is required to pay for any loss incurred. All students are required to abide by the rules and regulations of the hostels, which are made available on arrival. Due to the limited number of rooms, all requests for accommodation cannot always be met. It is therefore advisable to make such requests well ahead of time.

Activities

Nursing students from all years and programmes are eligible to demonstrate their leadership abilities through the Nursing Students Organisation (NSO). The NSO is responsible for facilitating student activities on-campus as well as social events.

Awards

At the end of each year and at the completion of their programme, students may be eligible for awards recognising their academic and/or leadership abilities. Students may receive awards in the areas of nursing, humanities and science.

Scholarships and Grants

Students entering any of the programmes at Aga Khan University School of Nursing (AKU-SON) may be eligible for financial assistance or scholarships based on merit. The New Zealand Overseas Development Assistance (NZODA) currently provides scholarships to eleven RN Diploma students from disadvantaged areas to successfully complete the Track 1 programme. The World Health Organisation (WHO) is also funding one student for the MScN programme.
