Specialist Services

The following consulting clinics are available at Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi (AKUH,N):


Cardiology Clinic
For all heart related conditions and tests to evaluate heart performance such as electrocardiogram (ECG), echocardiogram (ECHO) and exercise stress test (EST).

Paediatric Cardiology
Caters for children with all heart related problems.

Diet Advisory Clinic
Nutritional expertise enables the dietician to:
  • Assess each patient’s dietary needs and provide advice;
  • Formulate an appropriate liquid diet for patients unable to take food orally;
  • Formulate a controlled diet for patients with conditions such as diabetes and obesity;
  • Provide continued support and advice relevant to the patient’s lifestyles and conditions such as pregnancy;
  • Advice for pregnant women.

Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Clinic
This clinic caters to patients with ear, nose and throat conditions.

Gastroenterology Clinic
Patients with gastro disorders, for example, stomach ulcers and liver conditions are examined at the clinic.

General Surgery Clinic
Minor and major surgical procedures including: circumcision, appendicectomy, abdominal operations, removal of growths, breast lump and biopsies are performed.

Gynaecology Clinic
For gynaecological conditions in women’s reproductive health including: cervical cancer, colposcopy (facilitates visual inspection of the cervix), fibroids and infertility.
Gynaecology comprises of four clinics namely:
  • Gynaecology Oncology – Provides care to women with cancer related to reproductive system such as Cervix, Uterus and Ovaries.
  • Gynaecology – cCaters for reproductive health related problems in women such as fibroids, ovarian cysts, pelvic inflammatory diseases and others. Pap smears are also done to diagnose cervical cancer.
  • Colposcopy - This is a special examination done to visualise the cervix to detect any abnormalities to the cell structure. This is done to rule out and or determine the stage of cancer present.
  • Fertility – Couples are investigated together in order to establish the problem and treated accordingly.

Haematology Clinic
Patients seen in the clinic have blood disorder conditions such as leukaemia or anaemia. Follow-up is done to confirm prognosis after patients have undergone chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Health education concerning the risk factors is also provided.

Dermatology Clinic
Caters for patients with all types of skin, hair and nail problems. Special procedures like removal of growths and injection of scars are carried out.

Endocrinology Clinic
Caters for patients with endocrine glands disorders, for example, thyroid glands and pituitary glands.

Internal Medicine
Caters for patients with medical conditions such as uncomplicated hypertension, deep venous thrombosis, malaria, gastroenteritis and other non-chronic illnesses.

Nephrology Clinic
This clinic is for patients with kidney problems. Every visit, a patient undergoes a general medical check up including urinalysis, blood pressure and weight to monitor deteriorating conditions and ensure necessary interventions. To detect even the minutest changes in the kidney function, a urinalysis for microalbuminuria is performed annually. Health professionals are available to provide lifestyle and health advice.

Neurology Clinic
Patients diagnosed with central nervous system disorders including: epilepsy, facial palsy, nerve injury, migraine and stroke, are treated in this clinic.

Neurosurgery Clinic
Patients with central nervous system conditions that require surgical intervention are treated in this clinic. Patients with aneurysms, brain tumour, cerebral bleeding, head injuries, prolapsed vertebral discs and spinal cord tumours are seen here.

One Stop Breast Clinic
AKUH,N has opened the first One Stop Breast Clinic in Kenya. The clinic is geared to provide immediate consultation and prompt diagnosis of breast problems. Women and men suffering with Breast Cancer symptoms such as a breast lump, breast pain, or discharge from the nipple are able to seek consultation and prompt diagnosis from a highly trained and experienced team of experts.

One Stop Diabetic Clinic
Diagnosis and on-going care for diabetic and endocrine patients include:

  • Diabetologist
  • Ophthalmologist
  • Pharmacist
  • Diabetes educator
  • Dietician

One Stop Medical Clinic
The objective of this clinic is to prolong and improve the quality of life for patients infected by the HIV virus. It also aims at keeping HIV employees productive at their work. A team of highly motivated and dedicated professionals run this clinic:
  • Consultant physician (HIV Specialist)
  • Clinical pharmacist
  • Counselor
  • Dietician
  • HIV educator

Ophthalmology (Eyes) Clinic
All types of ophthalmological conditions are treated. Fluorescein angiography, a test to assess the extent and severity of diabetic retinopathy is provided. Laser treatment for progressive diabetic retinopathy is also available.

Orthopaedic Clinic
This clinic treats both adults and children with orthopaedic medical conditions including skeletal disorders/deformities, trauma, back pain and congenital deformities of the bone and spine.

Chest Clinic
Services offered by chest physicians include:
  • Compliance monitoring;
  • DDT facilitation;
  • Follow-up checks;
  • Health education;
  • Subsidised tuberculosis education kits.

The clinic works closely with the Kenya Association for the Prevention of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (KAPTLD).

Psychiatric Clinic
The clinic treats all types of adult and child mental illnesses including: stress management, counselling services for substance abuse and marital conflicts.

Radiology
The Hospital has invested in specialised equipment to enhance Radiology services, and provides a comprehensive range of imaging services, including routine and specialised procedures. The advanced equipment reduces the number of invasive procedures to a minimum.

Rheumatology Clinic
Caters for patients with rheumatological conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout and systemic lupus erythromantous arthritis.

Cardiothoracic Clinic
The Clinic treats and manages traumatic conditions of the chest, heart and blood vessels, lungs, blockages/narrowing of blood vessels and oesophagus through surgery.

Urology Clinic
The Urology Clinic attends to patients with urinary tract conditions including: bladder infections, enlarged kidneys, kidney trauma, male sexual dysfunctions, prostate enlargement and uteri stones.
