Infant and Child Care

Children's Hospital

If parental comfort can be measured in terms of care for one’s children, then the Paediatric Unit at Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi (AKUH,N) will be a source of constant comfort. The services offered depict a Children’s Hospital within a hospital.

The paediatric clinical staff provides a wide spectrum of paediatric care ranging from first encounter primary care, consultative general paediatrics to specialist care.

Children's Ward

The Children’s Ward has:

  • Two private rooms with an infant bed and a bed for the parent/guardian. Amenities include: television, video, telephone, mini refrigerator and wardrobe;

  • Seven semi-private rooms with a cot/bed for patient, a bed for the parent/guardian and washing facilities;

  • 24 general ward beds. Amenities include: washing facilities, dining area with television and a playground for recuperating children.

Specialist clinics in this department include:

  • General Paediatric Care Clinic: Post discharge patients with chronic illnesses including anaemia and sickle cell disease are treated at the clinic.

  • Neonatal Clinic: This Clinic cares for infants aged one day to 18 months, born underweight, premature and overweight or with neonatal jaundice or other neonatal conditions.

  • Paediatric Chest Clinic: The clinic specialises in respiratory disorders including asthma, tuberculosis and bronchopneumonia.

  • Paediatric Gastroentrology Clinic: Patients with stomach disorders including stomach ulcers and liver conditions are provided with treatment and specialised endoscopic tests.

  • Paediatric Neurology Clinic: Patients with neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy, epilepsy, seizures (convulsions) and hydrocephalus are treated at this clinic.

  • Paediatric Nephrology Clinic: This clinic is for children with kidney problems

  • Paediatric Surgical Clinic: The services provided at this clinic include:
    • Circumcision
    • Undescended testis
    • Hernias;
    • Bladder malformation
    • Imperforate anus
    • Tongue tie
    • Malformed genitalia.
Well Baby Clinic

The Well Baby package is available for the monitoring of the growth and development of children up to 18 months. Primary vaccinations, as recommended by the Kenya Extended Programme on Immunisation (KEPI) schedule and other vaccinations against childhood diseases are available.
