Diagnostic Services
Cardiac Ambulatory Care
To enhance its diagnostic scope, Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi (AKUH,N)
recently acquired cardiac ultrasound equipment for carrying out echocardiograms
(ECG). This specialised non-invasive diagnostic procedure scans and diagnoses heart
ailments.
Other machines in the Cardiac Ambulatory Centre include a Holter monitor, tread
mill for stress tests and portable blood pressure monitors for patients to observe
their blood pressure during their day to day routine.
Laboratory
Located at the Princess Zahra Pavilion, the laboratory
is the largest and most modern private diagnostic laboratory in East Africa. Under
the guidance of highly experienced clinical consultant pathologists, this state-of-the-art
facility offers 24 hours, seven days a week service for a host of routine and specialised
tests with short turnaround time.
Services available include:
- Haematology (full blood count, HIV testing, coagulation profiles and blood grouping);
- Clinical chemistry (blood sugar analysis, drug level measurement, lipid and hormonal
profiles);
- Microbiology (cultures of various specimens including TB, stool, blood, urine and
mycology);
- Histopathology/Cytology (pap smears, fine needle aspirations and biopsies);
- Molecular Biology (viral load testing);
- Blood donor unit;
- Other specialties include serology, cytology, parasitology and mycology.
AKUH,N Laboratory has been working with the National External Quality Assurance
Scheme (NEQAS), UK, the Centre for Disease Control, US and Aga Khan University,
Karachi in Pakistan to ensure that the clinical tests carried out by the laboratory
meet international quality standards. The scheme requires the Hospital to analyse
blood samples submitted by NEQAS to check the accuracy of the work carried out by
the laboratory. The samples, together with the laboratory result, are returned to
the UK for assessment by NEQAS. The laboratory also undertakes internal quality
control measures.

Radiology Services
The Hospital can conduct some of East and Central Africa’s most sophisticated range
of radiology examinations. The service is available to inpatients and outpatients.
Referring physicians do not need a formal affiliation to refer patients and diagnostic
investigations to AKUH,N.
The following services are available:
- The Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) at AKUH,N is a 1.5 Tesla, state-of-the- art
system which is capable of scanning virtually the whole body. It is the most sophisticated
MRI scanner in East and Central Africa and the only hospital based scanner. MRI
is a painless technique that allows doctors to see detailed images of the inside
of the body without using x-rays. It has no known biological hazards;
- Titanium crannioplasty procedures to correct cranial and facial defects is performed
in collaboration with University College Hospital, London;
- 16-Slice Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner is a multi-slice imaging technology, that
improves the quality and quantity of information available to clinicians reducing
the need for invasive procedures. It enables routine head and body procedures, bone
mineral densitometry, 3D study of the muscuo-skeletal system, angiographic studies
of the brain, cardiac and peripheral vascular system, CT guided interventional techniques
including biopsies and abscess drainage;
- Mammography is an X-ray examination of the breasts for early detection of cancer.
Specialised Radiology Procedures
- Barium study (demonstrates abnormal conditions in the oesophagus, stomach, intestines
and the bowel);
- Urogenital radiology (detects abnormal conditions in the kidney, ureter and bladder);
- Myelography (detects abnormalities in the spine in the prolapsed intervertebral
discs, tumours and cysts);
- Hysterosalpingography (examination of the uterus and fallopian tubes);
- Venography (detects status of veins, especially of the arms and the legs);
- Sinography (outlines the extent of a sinus);
- T-Tube Cholangiography (examination of ducts of the liver and duct after gall bladder
removal);
- Direct Puncture Femoral Arteriogram (leg arteries).
Orthopantomography (OPG)
This procedure provides detailed X-ray examinations of the dental arch, upper, lower
jaw, facial bones, temporo-mandibular joints and sinuses. The department provides
fluoroscopy services for surgical, orthopaedic procedures and pacemaker implants.
Endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP) is also available.
Physiological Measurement Unit (EEG/ECG)
Electrocardiogram (ECG) services are offered to inpatients and outpatients. The
following services are also available:
- Electroencephalogram (EEG) test evaluates brain frequency, reactivity, slow waves,
amplitude abnormalities and deviations from normal patterns;
- Audiogram/Typanogram test evaluates hearing patterns and measure middle ear functions;
- Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials (BAEP) measures hearing loss in neonates, children
and inpatients are unable to undergo conventional testing methods;
- Exercise Stress Test (EST) involves graded exercise tests on a treadmill. The ECG
is constantly monitored throughout this test.
Ultrasound
- General abdomen;
- Obstetric (routine, Doppler, biophysical profile score and anomaly scans);
- Pelvic;
- Infertility screening and follicular tracking;
- Transvaginal for early pregnancies and gynaecology;
- Small parts (orbits, thyroid, testes);
- Colour and power Doppler studies;
- Tissue harmonics;
- Transrectal for prostate;
- Echocardiography;
- Ultrasound guided biopsies (prostate, liver, kidney and breast).
