Clinical Support Services


Counselling Services

Counselling is a therapeutic process for assisting an individual identify his/her problems and coping strategies. Hospital counselors offer advice based on the growth of a confidential relationship between counselor and patient. Services offered include: children, adolescent, family, crisis intervention and health counseling services.

Pharmacy

The pharmacy strives to provide excellent service, drug utilisation management and drug information through its team of highly trained and dedicated staff. The main pharmacy is supported by four satellite pharmacies within AKUH,N, which are located next to the Children’s Ward, Medical Ward, Doctors Plaza and at the Princess Zahra Pavilion.

Services:
  • All prescriptions including those prescribed externally are clinically screened for optimal drug therapy;
  • Counseling for patients with special needs (especially HIV, Diabetics or Chemotherapy);
  • Extensive poisoning management protocols and drug information for health care professionals;
  • Development of formal procedures to ensure cost effective treatment with drugs;
  • Clinical pharmacy ward rounds to ensure optimal drug therapy.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is the assessment, treatment and prevention of injuries and disorders by physical and mechanical means (massage, regulated exercise, water, heat and electricity). It enables patients to function at their optimal physical level and often complements other therapies and treatments.

The Department works with patients to prevent disability, relieve pain, develop, improve and restore motor functions. The Unit/Department has a state-of-the-art hydrotherapy pool and gymnasium especially useful for treating post surgery and neurological patients.

Physiotherapists at AKUH,N practice the latest techniques in neuro-rehab, ante-natal/post-natal exercises and sports medicine. These services are available for both inpatients and outpatients.

Other services offered:
  • Mobility aids and orthopaedic appliances;
  • Occupational therapy;
  • Pressure garment fitting following burns;
  • Referral to speech and language therapy;
  • Specialised physiotherapy in neurology and sports medicine.

Outpatients: Monday to Friday: 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM
Saturdays: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Inpatients: 24-hours, daily

Speech and Language Therapy

The service professionally identifies, assesses and treats communication disorders in children and adults. These difficulties may be developed from birth or acquired during an illness or injury.

Patients with the following medical conditions can benefit from this service:
  • Cerebral palsy;
  • Down’s Syndrome;
  • Cleft lip and palate;
  • Developmental delay;
  • Cerebral malaria;
  • Stroke;
  • Head injuries;
  • Motor neurone disease;
  • Multiple sclerosis;
  • Parkinson’s disease;
  • Dementia;
  • Laryngectomy;
  • Glossectomy, other neurological difficulties and developmental syndromes.

The Aphasia support group (USEMAJI) is hosted by the Hospital once a month.
