Qualified Health Care Professionals

Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi (AKUH,N) medical team is comprised of resident doctors, credentialed consultants and qualified nursing staff supported by registrars with postgraduate qualifications. Senior consultants from major medical specialties complement the resident team.

International Standards and Working Practices

ISO 9001:2000 Certification

In July 2003 AKUH,N became the first hospital in Eastern Africa to be awarded the prestigious ISO 9001:2000 Certification for conforming fully to the International Quality Assurance standards for all clinical, diagnostics and administration and support services of the Hospital. These standards are accepted and recognised throughout the world as guidance for organisations to implement effective work systems, which satisfy customer’s quality assurance requirements.

The achievement of this status gives patients additional confidence in our hospital services. The Certification is proof that our staff is trained to the highest possible level in their fields, and speaks volumes of the dedication and commitment of all our staff members to raise quality standards.

ISO 9001:2000 Certification is dependent on comprehensive checks of organisational structure, management responsibility, resource management, patient related processes and the Hospital’s internal measurement analysis and plans for improvement. This includes interviews with staff at all levels to evaluate their knowledge of procedures, work requirements and responsibilities. Holders of ISO Certificate are subjected to regular surveillance visits to ensure the maintenance of required standards.

National Health Insurance Fund AFYA Awards

Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi won two out of five of the inaugural AFYA Awards presented by the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to health care institutions. This was in both public education and innovation in health categories in the urban section 208 institutions and individuals participated in the scheme. The AFYA Excellence Awards Scheme was launched by the NHIF with the aim of recognising professionalism among the country’s health care providers and to encourage innovation and high standard in the health sector.

Most Respected Company in the Service Sector

Aga Khan Hospitals in East Africa won the runner up award in the service sector on the PricewaterhouseCoopers in 2003 and 2004 survey of the most respected organisations. According to the survey by PricewaterhouseCoopers and Nation Media Group, companies in this sector are respected, for providing high quality delivery of service, expansion and diversification of distribution networks, customer care and satisfaction, reputation of management and high quality staff. The survey is conducted in the three East African countries, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania and the respected companies were voted by over 250 chief executive officers.

Infection Control

The Hospital’s dedicated Infection Control team plays a major role in the prevention and control of infections. It maintains an ongoing programme employing bacteriological surveillance of key areas including surgical wards, the Intensive Care, High Dependency and Renal units. All staff is trained to practice universal precautions. These measures have ensured prevention and management of highly infectious organisms, a reduction of hospital acquired infections from 2.5 to 0.5 per cent and increased hygiene screening and sterilisation.

External Quality Control Measures

The Hospital Laboratory collaborates with the National External Quality Assurance Scheme (NEQAS), United Kingdom, Centre for Disease Control, United States of America and Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan to ensure clinical tests conducted by the laboratory meet international standards. This partnership requires the Hospital to analyse blood samples from the laboratory for clinical accuracy. Every fortnight, these samples and their results are sent to NEQAS for assessment.

International Accreditation

The Hospital’s Maternity Services is accredited by the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, United Kingdom. Postgraduate radiology students from the University of Nairobi conduct their practicum with the Hospital’s radiology service.

Outpatient Services

Outpatient services are available in an integrated ante-natal, well baby and family planning clinic and various specialist clinics.

Inpatient Services

Accomodation is provided in general ward, semi-private and private rooms. We also have fully equipped delivery rooms for normal delivery and all obstetrics emergencies. Also available is a fully equipped nursery for normal babies and a Premature Care Unit with skilled neo-natal nurses and paeditricians. Patients can choose to be admitted by the Hospital’s team of resident doctors or by a private doctor. The Hospital employs a team of resident doctors specialising in various clinical care; medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology. Hospital patients benefit from a team-based approach to clinical needs. The resident doctor is able to assess and refer medical conditions to other doctors in the Hospital.
