Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi - Profile

The Aga Khan Platinum Jubilee Hospital was built with funds raised by the Ismaili community, together with a contribution from the Kenya Government, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the installation of His Highness Sir Sultan Mohammed Shah as the Imam of the Shia Imami Ismaili community.

The Royal Institute of British Architects presented the highest award to the Hospital for its functional and structural elements, which have made this building an example of outstanding modern architecture.

One of the objectives of the Aga Khan in building the hospital was, initially, for the teaching and training of nurses, with a long term policy of participating in medical training. The Hospital is now a well established Nurses Training School and is recognised by the University of East Africa for Medical Internship and Post Graduate Specialist Medical Training.

Aga Khan University (AKU) is an important part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a group of private, non-denominational development agencies and institutions working together to improve living conditions and opportunities in over 20 of the poorest countries in the developing world. In East Africa, campuses and programmes have been established in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda for studies in health and education. An Advanced Nursing Studies programme provides continuing education and undergraduate courses for practicing nurses, and Professional Development Centres in the three countries offer continuing and graduate education for teachers.
