Emergency Room

The fully equipped 27 bed emergency room is open 24 hours a day with a Triage Desk and Fast Track System to ensure prompt medical attention for all patients.

In case of an emergency, please call Emergency Room at Tel: 92 21 486-1090 and 486-1091 or 4930051 Ext. 1090/1091.

In the emergency room, the priority is to attend to patients with serious illnesses/injuries. To facilitate this, medical condition is initially assessed at the Triage Desk after the patient has registered at the Registration Counter, and sometimes even before registration, if the situation so demands.

The Triage Desk follows international guidelines for prioritising patients based on:

  • a short history of the illness;
  • vital signs like temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure.

Priority Levels

There are four different levels of priority, which are as follows:

Priority 1

Patient in a state of cardiovascular arrest or imminent collapse. These patients are attended to immediately at the Resuscitation Area. The doctors will speak to the family member after they have assessed and stabilised the patient. Examples of priority 1 include: Heart attack, severe injuries, severe bleeding, shock and severe asthma attack.

Priority 2

Patients with acute medical conditions that must be initially treated in the hospital. These patients are in stable condition and do not require resuscitation. These patients are attended to in the Critical Care Area. In such cases, the doctors will speak to the family after they have initially assessed the patient. Examples of Priority 2 conditions include major limb fracture/dislocation, moderate injuries, severe abdominal pain and other severe medical illnesses.

Priority 3

Patients with acute symptoms who are in a stable condition. Examples of priority 3 include: minor abdominal pain, diarrohea with mild dehydration, depression, non-cardiac chest pain etc.

Priority 4

These patients are stable and have complaints including earache, toothache, sore throat, suture removal and others. Such patients may be asked to visit our family physicians during the day hours.

Consultation and Treatment

Depending upon the patient's medical condition, the doctor may decide to get a consultation from specialist physicians from other departments. These doctors are not based in the Emergency Room and are sometimes called from home.

Observation after initial treatment/ investigations

After initial treatment and investigation, the patient may be observed in the Emergency Room for a number of hours. Following review, a decision will be made as to whether the patient's condition requires in-hospital admission or outpatient care .
