Patient Welfare in Action
Fauzia Karim
Two-year old Fauzia Karim burnt herself while playing with matches. She was unsuccessfully treated at a hospital in her locality and arrived at Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) Emergency Room with 20 per cent of her body covered in burns. Fauzia required extensive skin grafting to treat her burns and to spare her from permanent disfigurement. She was hospitalised for 12 days and her medical costs totalled Rs 83,000. Fauzia's family was unable to meet the complete cost of her medical care and appealed to the Patient Welfare Programme for help, which provided Rs 53,000 towards her medical treatment.
Marukh Shaheen
Twenty-year old Marukh Shaheen is a young nursing student from Quetta . She arrived at AKUH in a critical state with tuberculosis. Marukh's treatment required her to be hospitalised for 107 days before she was well enough to return home. Marukh's father, a retired soldier, was unable to afford her medical costs of Rs 970,000. This is where the Patient Welfare Programme made the difference with a contribution of Rs 925,000 towards Marukh's medical care.
The Patient Welfare Programme at AKUH has enabled countless patients like Fauzia and Marukh to have access to health care that not only helps to improve the quality of life but can also make the difference between life and death.
