Department of Surgery

The Department of Surgery provides comprehensive care in the areas of:

1. Cardiothoracic Surgery;
2. Dental-oral, maxillo-facial Surgery;
3. General Surgery;
4. Neurosurgery;
5. Ophthalmology;
6. Orthopaedic Surgery;
7. Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery;
8. Paediatric Surgery;
9. Plastic Surgery;
10. Urology Section;
11. Vascular Surgery

Surgical consultants work with a team of junior doctors and nurses to provide patient-focused care. Other health care personnel are involved when necessary. Anaesthetists also work closely with the surgical teams. The Department has developed various clinical pathways to facilitate efficient functioning and coordination between care stations. In addition, consultations from various specialties in other clinical disciplines, radiology and laboratory are often sought and are readily available.

Within each section, there are further sub-specialisations. For example, micro-vascular surgery, minimally invasive procedures for which sophisticated technological support is available. While managing complex surgical problems with the help of intensive monitoring, the Department has also made a major effort towards developing day care surgery, which is highly cost-effective and convenient for patients.

The Department has 124 inpatient beds, 15 ICU beds, eight special care beds, and 12 day surgery beds. Services include state-of-the-art equipment in the 11 main operating theatres along with local, general and epidural anaesthesia service. For the convenience of patients, pre-anaesthesia evaluation, laboratory tests, financial and admission services are available at one station. Package prices are available for common surgical procedures.

The Department is providing outreach ambulatory services at Aga Khan Health Services, Pakistan (located in Karimabad) and very soon at Clifton Medical Services, an off-site facility of Aga Khan University Hospital.
