Paediatric Surgery Section
The Section of Paediatric Surgery provides comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services in the management of general surgical and urological problems in neonates and children. A team of certified paediatric surgeons assisted by paediatric surgery fellows and surgical residents are responsible for comprehensive surgical care for children of all ages.
Outpatient clinics run six days a week, including Saturdays, in Consulting Clinic 5 (Extension 1038, 1039). A combined paediatric urology/nephrology clinic for complex urinary problems is conducted every Saturday morning in Clinic 3. Clinic appointments can be made on phone by calling extension 1038-1039.
The paediatric surgery service also provides 24-hour consultant and senior resident cover for acute surgical problems through the Emergency Room.
Services
General Paediatric Surgery
Management of hernias; undescended testis; all traumas including burns and external and internal injuries; head and neck lesions; upper airway problems (e.g. foreign body and chemical aspiration/ingestion); general thoracic and abdominal procedures; all newborn surgical procedures for congenital birth defects including tracheoesophageal fistula, diaphragmatic hernia, neonatal intestinal obstruction, anorectal malformations, Hirschsprung’s disease, etc.
Paediatric Surgical Oncology
These services include management of solid thoracic and abdominal tumours, e.g. neuroblastomas, Wilms’ tumours, rhabdomyosarcomas and lymphomas.
Paediatric Urology
These services include urinary tract malformations, e.g. congenital hydronephrosis, vesicoureteric reflux, posterior urethral valves, hypospadias, evaluation and reconstruction of ambiguous genitalia, management of voiding disorders and stone disease of kidneys, ureter and bladder.
Support services include experienced paediatric anaesthesiologists and individualised nursing care with state-of-the-art neonatal intensive care unit and facility to ventilate newborns. Day care surgery facilities for minor procedures, e.g. circumcisions and ESWL (shock wave therapy for stone disease), and laparoscopic surgeries are also available.
