Ophthalmology Section

The Ophthalmology Section at Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) offers comprehensive tertiary eye care services. In addition to addressing routine eye problems in a University-based teaching hospital setting, it provides treatment for complex eye problems by consultants with sub-specialty interest.

Services

The section uses a state-of-the-art facility for diagnostic testing and treating eye diseases and vision problems. All the eye consultants based at AKUH are highly qualified with many years of clinical experience, both overseas and national. The consultants are experts in their chosen areas. Services and specialties include anterior segment and state-of-the-art small incision suture-less phaco cataract surgery often under topical (no injection) anaesthesia; cornea including transplant; glaucoma; vitreo-retinal surgery; medical retina including the latest treatment for macular degeneration e.g. PDT and Anti VEGF therapy; oculoplastic and orbit laser surgery; paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus (squints); neurophthalmology and electrophysiology.

The diagnostic services include fundus and slit-lamp photography; digital fluorescein angiography; automated perimetry (Humphrey HFA - 750); autorefraction; ultrasound A-scan and B-scan. Laser surgery facilities include Nd:YAG Laser; solid-state argon laser; binocular indirect laser and laser for cyclophotocoagulation.

The eye theatre is purpose-built with facilities to undertake all kinds of minor and major eye surgeries. Latest surgical equipment is available including Alcon Legacy phaco machine; Accurus vitrectomy machine and Zeiss and Topcon OFFICE operating microscopes with video camera attachment

As the eye service is an integral part of a multidisciplinary hospital, patients can get easy access for consultation with other specialties, e.g. neurologists, physicians, diabetologists or neurosurgeons for ensuring the best possible patient care. Outreach clinic facilities run by AKUH staff are at Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan (AKHSP) in Garden and Karimabad and at AKUH Clifton Medical Services.
