Cardiology Section
The Cardiology Section of the Department of Medicine provides comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services to all patients with cardiovascular diseases. At present, the section has eight full-time and 11 non-full-time consultants.
The section is equipped with a 14-bed Coronary Care Unit (CCU) located at Khimji Building, for patients requiring intensive care. An 11-bed Coronary Step Down Unit (CSDU) is designed for a selected group of cardiac patients requiring intermediate level care. A floor of the Private Wing has been designated as the "Cardiology Floor" with six telemetry units networked throughout the floor to monitor cardiac patents in all rooms. A 20-bed ward has been allocated as the "Cardiology Ward" with bed-side monitors networked to the central monitoring system.
All cardiology outpatient clinics are located in Nazerali-Walji Building where a full-time cardiologist is available throughout the week. Non-invasive diagnostic services have a technology-based comprehensive transthoracic echocardiography service with facilities for transesophageal echocardiography, stress echocardiography, ETT, 24-hour blood pressure and ECG monitoring and cardiac nuclear imaging.
The angiography suite is fully equipped with digital cardiac catheterisation facility, which provides diagnostic and therapeutic services for both adults and paediatric patients suffering form various cardiovascular problems. The service offers diagnostic angiography, right and left heart catheterisation, percutaneous transluminal angioplasty and implantation of temporary and permanent pacemakers, including the most sophisticated dual chamber pacemakers. Balloon angioplasty with stent placement for heart and renal arteries is performed routinely, with results comparable to pooled results of North American and European centres.
