Cardiology Section
The Cardiology Section provides complete and comprehensive services and care to patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases. These services range from primary prevention to rehabilitation and support services for terminally ill cardiac patients. The section comprises of the state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities with highly trained physicians and nursing staff.
The cardiac services include:
Coronary Care Unit (CCU)
Located at the Khimji Building, CCU is a 14-bed facility for critically ill cardiac patients and is supported by dedicated nurses and physicians who are available round-the-clock.
Coronary Step-Down Unit (CSDU)
Located at the Private Wing, CSDU is an 11-bed facility design ed for a selected group of cardiac patients requiring intermediate level care. Monitoring of each patient in all the rooms is supported by telemetry units which are networked throughout the floor.
Cardiology Outpatient Clinics
These are located in the Nazerali-Walji Building where a full-time cardiologist is available throughout the week. Heart Protection Clinic and Women Heart Clinic have also been introduced recently to evaluate patients at risk of having a cardiac event at Nazerali-Walji Building.
Cardiology Clinics are also conducted at the three off-site centres located at Clifton, Karimabad and M. A. Jinnah Road.
The Community Health Centre at AKUH, Karachi also holds Cardiology Clinics offering patients walk-in-appointment at subsidised charges.
Other Diagnostic Services
A comprehensive range of non-invasive diagnostic services include:
- Trans-thoracic Echocardiography
- Trans-esophageal Echocardiography
- Stress Echocardiography
- Exercise Tolerance Test

- 24-hour Blood Pressure
- ECG Monitoring
- Cardiac Nuclear Imaging

Some of these services are also available at the Hospital's off-site centres located at Clifton and M. A. Jinnah Road. A new service introduced this year is Cardiac CT Angiography which is a non-invasive modality to identify coronary artery disease.
Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory Suite
The Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory Suite, located adjacent to CCU, is state-of-the-art digital cardiac catheterisation facility, which provides diagnostic and therapeutic services to both adults and paediatric patients.
The Interventional Cardiology and Advance Electrophysiology Service
This service is available 24 hours a day and is the only service in Pakistan providing emergent interventions to patients presenting with Acute Myocardial Infarctions. In addition, there is an Advance Electrophysiology Service to diagnose complicated heart rhythm problems and implant sophisticated pacemakers and defibrillators.
The results of coronary interventions performed at AKUH, Karachi, compared quarterly to European Centres, so far have been equivalent to the international standards.
